I really don't understand why people give this place such a low rating! Fish was fresh, sushi was delicious, service was amazing! I can't ask for better sushi or service!

The main reason I like this place is because it's so close and if I get lazy on a Saturday night I can pop in here and get some take out- Easy, simple, quick. The sushi they have is alright, not the best and not the worst. I love that there is plenty of parking and it never gets too overcrowded. I've had one bad experience here and it was when my mom and I came here for dinner. We ordered the baked scallop rolls and they were undercooked and just didn't taste right. My mom got sick because of this and the experience wasn't pleasant. Since then I have been back and the food has been okay. I think if it weren't for the convenience I probably wouldn't bother.

There's only one reason I would come here; GARLIC EDAMAME !!! YUMMMMM! If you haven't tried it yet and your here, your in luck because they do it well. Fuck their sushi, its whatever (granted I got their vegetarian roll which consisted of tempura fried garbage veggies) but their garlic edamame is scrumptious. Perfectly seasoned without the overwhelming garlic-y flavors that one would expect. Its also has a spicy kick to it because of the rayu and dried chili peppers. So amazing!!! Great ambience tho. Nice place to grab Mame and mingle with friends ^_^. So forget the sushi (vegetarian friendly) and just come for the appetizers.

My family and I come here quite often and the sushi is always delicious! Although this time the salmon sashimi was still a bit frozen, I will refrain from lowering the score. Hopefully next time it's not frozen ;)

OK Sushi, been there a couple of times but I don't this I will go there again, something about the place doesn't sit well and it's pricey for what they serve.

  • Lauren D.

Our favorite affordable sushi bar! Try a Red Dragon or a Veggie Tempura roll. YUM!

  • Isamar P.

Their sushi is quite good! The service is why I give this place three stars. Unfortunately the waiter was terrible at his job. I didn't get one refill while I was there and I felt like he just hovered around me and my friend...annoying. i just couldn't enjoy my meal.

Enjoyed dinner here with a couple of girlfriends on a Saturday night. The girls ordered a Bento box and a salad, which they enjoyed. I ordered the Fantasy Roll, which was topped with fresh avocado but the flavor left something to be desired. It was good but not memorable. The service was good, but not exemplary. I'm glad I tried this place out but I probably won't visit again.

Waited too long for service. Got our drinks and no one came for our order. After waiting for 30min ended up leaving the place.

GREAT SUSHI I've been to a lot of different sushi spots in they Valley and in L.A. This place is among the best. Great service, nice atmosphere, delicious sushi, and not pricey at all. I'll keep going here.

Love this place not only is it near my home but has by far the most delicious sushi. It's very clean and the waiters are very nice and ready to attend. It's a bit pricey for my wallet but it's worth every penny. My go to place for special occasions.

  • Hannah R.

Tried this place for the first time and I would definitely come again. The waiters could have been more attentive, but the food was pretty cheap and it was good sushi. Usually I order two rolls when I go out to get sushi, so I ordered the crunchy jalapeño roll and an avocado roll. These rolls turned out to be huge, which was awesome, but I definitely could not finish all of it. The crunchy jalapeño roll was delicious, but warning, it's VERY SPICY. I look forward to trying their other rolls.

  • Krista R.

Used to be better quality and better priced about 5 years ago, then things changed.. I haven't enjoyed the service or the quality of food on occasions that I have visited in the last year. CSUN discount for students is probably the only upside to visiting.

I was excited being that it was Xmas day and this was the only sushi spot open! We basically ate the appetizers, the oysters were delish :P the yellowtail was amazing, and the belly fat tuna melted in my mouth. We had dessert the fried green tea ice-cream tempura. I would eat there again!

    (4)
  • Annie P.

The place is really nice I use to love this place until I was told that they don't put cucumber in there California roll what is a California roll without cucumber it gives it the crunch after the soft crab and avocado ! I'm so over this place

  • Nicole L.

Last week, we decided to try this place. My mom ordered a roll and asked to add cucumber and the waitress told us that the roll was premade so they could not add cucumber. She then realized what she said and tried to cover it up and say the roll isn't good with cucumber. So we ordered the roll anyways with out the cucumber. And let's just say I would rather be eating sushi at my local grocery store. The other rolls we ordered was not fresh. And we didn't get our edamame we ordered until after we finished all our rolls. Would never eat here again.

I thought I've been to every sushi place in the valley! This place is in a strip mall with a lot of parking. The prices were affordable and I love menus with pictures!! I recall really great music as well and the booths were comfy!

  • Ryan G.

Freshest fish in town. I always get an albacore roll when I go. All the appetizers are good especially the garlic edamame.

    (4)
  • Francisco M.

The sushiis good garlic edamame is delicious my wife is picky with sushi when we don't want to spend too much money we come here

  • Pancho C.

Good size sushi for the price. They include 20% tip for parties 6 or more. Last time I came they included my newborn baby as a person and had us pay they 20% tip. Ridiculous. You can obviously count that there are 5 people eating at the table. Just be careful when you get the bill and look at it before paying. Our mistake.

    (3)
  • Alex K.

We will never be back here again. When our check came, we noticed there was a 20% gratuity charge on the bill. We only had 5 people in our party. When we inquired about it, they said it is on all of their checks. We said we wanted to dispute the 20% tip but she said we HAD to pay it and they would not change it. Unbelievable!!! I told them we would never be back again. The person in the front didn't seem to care and gave us an attitude. The food and service does not warrant 20%. They are rude and full of themselves. Go to Sushi Raw a block away. Way better than this place. At least you can tip what YOU want.

  • Andrea T.

This is our very faviorite Sushi, my young daughter is a very picky eater, and they always make things special for her when we go here. I have always found the staff to be wonderful and food fresh. They aren't the cheapest place in town but their food and service is over the top, so I don't mind it not being the cheapest. Wish we could eat here everyday!

My favorite sushi restaurant. Haven't had anything bad. Get here early on Friday and Saturday they ge Ty busy.

Good food, nice environment and great service. I will def come back to this place for Japanese food!

  • Brenda D.

Went here a couple minutes ago and the service was bad. We ordered a spicy tuna salads. I got a taste of wasabi in my salad. I told the waitress and she asks the chefs and they said that they didn't put wasabi. I tried it eating it and the wasabi was too strong. My sister's salad had the wasabi flavor too in her salad. I stopped the waitress again and asked if they work around wasabi and maybe they could've used he same utensil that they served wasabi in and she asked the chefs and they said no. I tried eating some again and I couldn't stand the flavor of wasabi and I asked if the can take it back and exchange it for a roll and they said no because I had tried it. How am I supposed to know that it was going to taste without trying it? I had to tell them I just wasn't going to pay for it. They said they were going to make an exception this time. Next time, if I try it, I would have to pay for it. This is ridiculous. It didn't help that we were sitting in front of the chefs and they kept looking at me and talking in Japanese. I could only assume they kept talking about me.

  • Carpe D.

Disappointed. I've been a loyal customer here for years and the last two experiences left a bad taste in my mouth (yuck). The fish is OLD. I don't care when they say they got it in. It tastes OLD! They used to have better quality food but recently the food sucks! On top of that, the lady at the front desk who I assume is the owner is VERY rude. I'm giving you business and paying you, clearly you're asking customers to not come back with your ugly attitude. Oh and they didn't comp the old fish they served (took 15% off of 2 rolls) which turns out to be a $2 difference in price if they had comped to begin with. They may be going out of business, all I know is I'm not giving them any.

The positive: they do not only serve sushi and my sisters love their steak teriyaki so if you are not a sushi fan, you will not starve. The not-so-positive: The ambiance, it's kind of dark and dingy inside and I am always very cold. They also never seem to have enough laminated menus because we're always served only one or two in our parties of 5+ and then given to-go menus. The food: Their rolls are about $2-3 higher than other local sushi restaurants, but they are generously portioned. The taste is fine as well. Their rolls cater more to American palates and focus on the imitation crab, cream cheese, and fried fillers though. The tempura is okay, too. The service: The regular staff is friendly enough. They are not overtly bubbly, but they're not rude or anything. With one exception... There is this one woman who is either a manager or an owner. She is so mean and militant and makes me afraid to want to order. Whenever I see the other workers, they seem to cower around her. In summation, this is not my kind of sushi restaurant and I only come here when it's a special occasion for my baby sister.

  • Anna J.

I love the up beat energy here at night. We have been here several times. Definitely not your typical sushi place. The minute you walk in, you are greeted by staff. If you don't mind upbeat loud music then you will enjoy eating here. I don't mind it as it reminds me of my "clubbing" days. That was ancient ago... the food is always yummy. Lots of choices. Be daring and try something new! Check this place out and find out for yourself.

I don't know why this place has such low ratings because my two dining experiences here were great. My dining companions and I have ordered: 1. Cucumber salad 2. Cucumber roll 3. Big tuna roll 4. Yakisoba plate 5. Udon combo 6. Avocado salad 7. Seaweed salad 8. Steamed vegetables The cucumber roll was tiny, but simple and fresh. The sushi was fresh and nicely presented. The yakisoba and udon were generously portioned and well-made. Their version of the cucumber salad is really nice, with thick half slices of cucumber and well-seasoned vinegar. The avocado salad was pretty huge and well-dressed, as were the seaweed salad and steamed vegetables. These are super fresh and healthy clean-eating/macrobiotic//vegan/paleo options here. This restaurant has a nice ambience. It feels special and fun compared to more casual sushi places. I'd say bring family or a special friend when you want good Japanese food, but don't want to sit in a hole-in-the-wall type sushi joint. Customer service is pretty great, too. There's plenty of free parking in the shared lot off of Balboa Blvd. and an ethnic produce market next door.

Best sushi in the area for sure. It's always fresh and they make it super fast so if I'm ever starving, I just head straight there. Every roll is bombayyy, so you'll always catch me coming back!

People always complain that burgers never look like the ones in the picture, well there sushi always comes out ready for a selfie. Soooo delicious and fresh, I really love the sauce tha comes on the little salad with sushi as well. Definitely best sushi, and for a decent price, in the valley....and that fried ice cream oh my goodness

Sushi was decent not the best I have had but edible. However, the worst part of the place was being made to feel rushed to eat because all the staff clearly wanted to leave. We showed up right around 10, they close at 11. I would never show up to a restaurant with less than 30min before they close, however an hour I find more than acceptable. We arrived at 10 and were promptly seated, placed our drink order, drinks were brought promptly followed by them requesting our food order. We order 3 rolls, within 5 minutes of the order they are places on our table. Now that I'm fine with, however any other sushi place would have served them to us one at a time, however since they clearly wanted to leave we got them all at once. At this time it is maybe 10:20, we are then asked for last call! They close at 11! By this time the staff is clearing all the tables, they took our soy sauce and brought us our check and said this "no hurry but we are closing the cashier so if you can pay..." The sushi chefs were wrapping all of the fish up etc. This is really a poor example of great service, if I ever ran a restaurant there would be NO SIGN of us closing while I had dining guests still eating! This place had staff leaving while we were still eating, including our server left! The busboys were hovering over our table to take any dish that looked remotely empty away. We were not the only table there either! By the time we left it was 10:50 technically they were open for 10 more min but anyone walking up at that time would have found them closed. Since the sushi at best was just average I doubt I would ever go back there again. I want to go to eat some place and not feel rushed to leave.

This is by far one of my family's favorite dinner spots. I'm there at least 3 times a month and have never had anything less than great service. The staff is friendly and attentive, and the food is always great. The Green Dragon and Crunch Shrimp rolls are amazing! The price is about average for sushi. I love this place!

  • Laura Z.

This is one of my favorite sushi spots that is close to me. I only go here when I want to just pick it up and eat at home. The service here is really good and everyone is so friendly and attentive. The sushi selection is wide. They have a lot of fresh rolls to choose from as well as tempura and baked rolls. The sashimi is very fresh too. The spicy tuna salad is very good too. I always get the caterpillar roll and the Asahi roll. The hawaii roll is really great too. My boyfriend says they have the best california tempura roll. I like it too. I also like their garlic edamame. Its a must try!!!

By far, my favorite sushi restaurant to go too. May be a little pricey, but the food is so delicious! Awesome service as well! The waitresses/waiters are always attentive and friendly.

  • Michael Alan C.

I went here on a date, and I had some of the best service I've had at any restaurant. We got seated right away, didn't make any reservations. Our waiter, Alan, was very accommodating. I have a bit of a picky girlfriend, when it comes to water and how her sushi is made. And he made sure it came out to par. This place has above great service! Definitely coming here again with other dates.

    (5)
  • Jane G.

Have been coming here for years, Always get great service and the food is very good. I read in an other review that they make you pay 20% gratuity for party 6 or less. Not true. We come with a party of 5-7 all the time and never has that happened. We put what we want. Helen and her staff always treat us very nice.

  • Vallery P.

WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER!!! I was on my lunch to order sushi to go. I should have said to eat there instead. People who came after to me was eating while I was still waiting. It took 30 mins for me to finally get my food. The lady in the front gave us dirty looks right when I said can I get to go and then ignored me the rest of the time till I was getting rung up. Then I asked for eel sauce for my food and wanted to charge me .50 cents each! Are you kidding me?!! To top it off I wasted majority of my lunch waiting for the food and it was COLD at the end! DONT COME HERE!!!

  • Maylaina D.

Love this place. Great fresh sushi. Great food. Only down fall is the lack of space. Kinda small for a large group. It can get over crowded as well. Perfect for a date night.

  • Cynthia K.

This restaurant is not bad. The Sushi is decent and the décor is really nice. Its a pretty big restaurant too. My only complaint is that the staff are not very friendly. The waiters and waitresses always seem too busy. They are efficient but not helpful when choosing or even offering suggestions.

    (3)
  • Sara C.

I really liked this place. Ordered carry out and it was ready in 15 minutes. It was delicious. Definetly going back there.

I love the garden salad with their special salad dressing, it's delish. Prices are fair, food is good, staff is friendly. Perfect for lunch

  • Zaira S.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND to come to this sushi spot. The lobster roll is not lobster it is CRAWFISH . Not only that the service is horrible we waited almost 29 mins for the waiter/waitress to attend us!! When we asked for the the check we had to ask 3 servers and we still got charged 20% for gratitude which I really don't think they deserved. I have gone to different spots like hole in the wall spots and I had better service in these small places. I will NOT COME BACK HERE OR SEND ANYONE I KNOW TO EAT SUSHI OR DRINK ANYTHING IN GENERAL. 5 thumbs down I wouldn't rate this spot.

  • Priscilla O.

I would LOVE to give this place 4 stars, but I just can't. Let me explain: I went in today and the food was really good. Try the avocado salad. It was really good and they didn't skimp on the avocado like most 'avocado salad.' But the fact that when my friend asked for a refill and our waiter was so annoyed about it, really bothered me. It's your job. I'm a server, I know what it's like. But when I am going to a restaurant, I don't expect to be treated like royalty. I just want a refill without the attitude. Also, he just hovered over my table but never offered a refill. We had to ask. I usually don't write bad reviews based off bad service, the food and cleanliness is most important, but this guy was a total jerk. With that being said, it won't stop me from going. The rolls were really great and the avocado salad was so good. I just hope that guy won't wait our table when I do return.

  • Alina C.

On the positive side. Their chicken teriyaki bowl is amazing. I'm not a big sushi person but my mom is and she really likes it. Also the fried rice seems to be pretty popular here as well. So the foods good. On to the negatives. The service is not good.. And if you sit in the back area near the bathrooms, chances are your waiter will forget about you. It's really annoying trying to flag down someone to bring you the check. On a different Friday night it was really busy so we decided to order out. We got there picked up the food. Came all the way home to an order that wasn't ours. Super hungry and upset we were back where they gave us our food after waiting for the huge crowd standing in front of the register cleared.. So yeah foods good, service, eh.

    (3)
  • Maria N.

Its okay I guess.... a bit over priced if you ask me. The sushi was good but I' d rather go to Yagumo Sushi in Van Nuys.

    (4)
  • Tracy S.

One word, worms. Yeah, I said worms! I found them in the sashimi in my sashimi salad; not cool. I will never go back there this was their second chance with us but it was also their last.

    (1)
  • Jihi J.

Food is OK.. you can definitely find better places for sushi. Recently I went there for lunch and they charged me 20% tip on my bill. If you pay with credit card and don't check the bill, you might end up paying 50% tip. FYI you are not required by the law to pay a tip(but Asahi sushi will charge you 20% anyway)

    (3)
  • Amanda Q.

Service sucked sooooo bad the lady Willie I think that was her name. She was so rude we were waiting to give our order and no one would pay attention to us. But shout out to the guy cleaning the table in front of us he was the only nice one and he kept calling willie to take our order I usually remember Asahi to be really good. Won't come in for a while. I'd rather go to shogun.

  • Karmen L.

I can't get over the fact that there's ALOT OF ROLLS TO LOVE IN THIS PLACE. Snowcone, Red Dragon, Green Dragon, Caterpillar, Baked Lobster, and more that too bad I don't remember the names. Sashimis are bombs! Mmm they keep me craving. I Asahi Sushi. Not 5 but 10 stars to that!

    (5)
  • Carlos P.

Not the best; below average fish and the stir fry was over seasoned. If you're looking for good sushi drive somewhere else. If you're simply looking to satisfy a craving for fish, this will do.

  • Dii T.

My favorite sushi place in the Valley. The food is great and so is the presentation! Though the service is friendly, they don't come around that often to your table (it feels like). If you like sushi, it's a must try!

    (4)
  • Clarina K.

This place is DA BOMB! My favorite sushi in the valley for the last 3 years. Fantasy Roll and Tiger roll are a MUST. DELICIOUS garlic edamame and decent tuna on crispy rice roll. Great avocado salad. I just love this place. It's clean and fairly busy most of the time which I feel is a good sign. I have waited for a table a time or two but never for too long. Pictures on the menu, large servings, decent prices for the amount of food you get. I will continue to come back to this place ALWAYS!

    (5)
  • Ashlie B.

Pretty decent quality sushi for its price. It's owned by Koreans so I didn't have a huge expectation. However, for Korean owned sushi joint, they had pretty good food and good service. I liked their scallop cut roll and salmon sushi. I'd go back for sure.

  • Stephanie V.

This place is amazing !! The food is bomb.com the customer service by far the best. The people are really nice and I always feel welcomed. I'm usually always attended by Alan a young man he is always there when I go and he's always provided great service. Everything about this place is amazing I fully recommend it!

  • Ernson M.

The restaurant was packed but they were able to sit us down in a few minutes. We ordered about 16 orders of Salmon and YellowTail Sushi. They were very fresh and light. We also ordered 4 rolls and Tempura ice cream for dessert. Good food and quick service. Thank you Asahi!

  • Marlene R.

I don't understand why this place has bad reviews, it is BOMB! The sushi is delicious! Ive been here about 5 times with my girlfriend and this place never disappoints. And the best part is, they bring out your food quick! Every time we place our order, it takes about 5-8 mins max to get to the table. Michelle has been our server twice and she's very friendly and caters to your needs.

I'm really conflicted on this one. This is one of my "go to" sushi places, the food is always good and service is always great. My son and I go there quite often and have never been disappointed. I was out and about doing some Dr Appts today and decided to drop by for my sushi fix for the week. Wandered in and told the "one for lunch" the server was told by the manager "small table in the back". I followed her all the way to the back to this tiny little table by the bathrooms, I pointed over to a nice booth by the window and asked if I could sit there as there were 3 open booths by the window so I couldn't understand why they were seating me and the horrible cramped table. She said to me " no, since we are so busy" Uh OK..there are 3 open booths and I can't sit at one because you are too busy? I finally figured out the since I was a single diner I couldn't sit in a booth because if other people came they would have to sit at a table? I was clearly bothered by she couldn't have cared less. Every time she brought something to my table she had to wait for ME to shuffle things around cause there wasn't enough room..did I mention how small this table was? The little chair was so hard and uncomfortable, I was just bad. Funny thing, the whole time I sat there up until I left, NO ONE sat at those booths..so not only did I have an uncomfortable lunch,I will NEVER go back there because they treated me like I was less important then 2 or 3 guests, one diner is JUST as important as 10 people because they are CHOOSING to spend their money there and should be treated as such. Sorry, but I'm done with this place.

"Meh. I've experienced better." Yup, this place deserves two stars, and I'm already being generous about it. Came here for dinner tonight around 6pm with two of my girlfriends. One of them has been here already and she enjoyed it so she wanted us to try it. For 6pm on a Tuesday it was a full house. We ended up sitting by the bar because we didn't want to wait for a table, and we were hungry. I ordered the Energy roll, it had shrimp tempura and spicy tuna inside, and eel on top. It was pretty good but the spicy tuna was way toooo spicy for me. I've tried spicy tuna at most places and they've all been consistent with the taste. But here, it was just overwhelming to me. But here comes the bad part, my two other girlfriends' food came before mine did. We're all in the same party, shouldn't all of our food come out at the same time?! No! I had to wait at least 20 minutes for mine! I felt bad for my girlfriends because they waited for my sushi to come out but it was taking too long. Not good at all. My girlfriend even asked the sushi chef in front of her who took our orders if my roll was coming out soon, and he just non challantly said, "yeah, it's coming. I'm busy." WTF!?!? You're busy?? Well, I'm hungry!!! How come you made their orders and you didn't make mine with theirs?!?! Get your sh*t together! I didn't get his name, although I should have. But that's not the icing to the cake, folks. We just about finished eating and was just waiting for the check and what do I see in the window where they keep the fish??? A fly!!! A fly where the fish is. The fish they use to make your sushi!!! I say that is soooo disgusting!!!! (I've posted a picture for proof) I wouldn't come here ever again. Super slow service with a side of fly with my sushi....no thanks.

Me and my sister is in search for a good Japanese Resto/Bar with a nice ambiance and we stumble upon this place. As we stepped in it was pretty crowded, but we were seated quickly. Place is a bit small, but ambiance is very welcoming. Time to order! We order some of the Sashimi appetizers and I must say it is so fresh and the portion is big. We also order a bento box and seafood udon. The broth of the udon is awesome! Its very light and tasty! By the way the serve staff are very friendly and quick service! 5 star for food and service! As for the tempura it is light and crispy! Just how a proper tempura should be made. Well its a bit pricey for the food, but its worth it. I will definitely come back here often!

HONOR YOUR COUPONS!! Coupons are marketing. If I mention your coupon, your marketing has worked. If you then DO NOT HONOR YOUR COUPON, your stingy nature has over powered your marketing and I now dislike you and will not come back. You lost a 2x/week customer.

  • Hannah K.

The rolls here are just ok and the sashimi is average at best. It's a little too pricey for the quality if you ask me. Their fried ice cream is pretty large, but not always crunchy like other ones I've had. I really dislike the service. I've eaten here at least 5 times. Each time I visit food takes forever to come out yet I feel like they rush me and whoever I'm with to order eat and get out. I realize you're busy, but geez, let me enjoy my food first... There are plenty of other places to get better sushi and better service in the valley so take your business elsewhere.

I love Asahi Sushi!!! It's always so yummy in my tummy :] Whenever sushi calls I go running straight to Asahi. It's good sushi, good service, decently priced which is a big plus for us starving and super broke college students. Their baked salmon roll, tempura roll and caliland roll never disappoints and are actually my go to rolls when I walk in. So if sushi ever calls you like it calls me then you should definitely stop in :] My CSUN students bring your ID, we receive 15% off :] (special rolls & the combo menu) Every little bit helps :]

Its too bad a great location like this with nice ambiance and a pleasant staff cant have descent sushi quality. Almost wish they werent nice people so I'd feel better about my 1 star rating but the sushi serious was not good.

Sushi was just whatever. Prices are average for a sushi place. Our food came out without having chopsticks to eat it, Servers looked miserable working there (a typical Asian restaurant) We weren't please with the service since they look like their rushing us all the time with every food that came out, but we eventually still leave an average tip.

Sigh. I really wanted to like this place. Unfortunately, there were 3 issues that is causing me to write this review. 1. They tried to pass off Toro (fatty tuna) with a cut off the tail end of the fish. It was very fishy, had remnants of the skin, and had zero marbling in the cut. It was disgusting. I had it returned. 2. I ordered Uni, it was dark brown, watery, and not firm. I returned it. 3. Service was just horrible. No smiles on the servers, no apologies for the attempt to serve below par food. No follow up to see if everything was okay. The rolls were okay, but to really judge a sushi restaurant, you need to judge by the nigiri which was very disappointing.

The food was amazing!!! The food came out so quickly after we put the order in. Their baked rolls are so good and creative. The only issue was the amount of time it took the waiter to return to us when we were ready to order, need the check, and needed a refill. He had to call for their attention from the back of the restaurant. Otherwise, a fantastic place!!! I will go back again!

The food is pretty good but a little over priced. And the day I turned 21 I went there for lunch to have a drink with my cousin and they did not allow me to do so... They said I'm not 21 yet... According to my birth certificate I was. So hmmm lol but other then that one issue I enjoy the sushi the crunch roll is probably my favorite there.

Asahi sushi is my favorite sushi place in Valley. Why? 1. They have fresh (not too fishy) tasting sashimi. 2. All of their rolls are delicious and creative. 3. The staff here is very professional and nice. The manager especially is amazing. She always greets me by my name and remembers what I usually order. Overall amazing place for sushi & sake. Will definitely be back when I'm in the valley area.

I have never been to a restaurant who IGNORES customers. Tonight I wanted to have some sushi take out from Asahi so I searched for their number yelp. I called them once. No answer. I thought maybe they are busy and tried again. I called and again no answer. I called them about 7 times and NO answer. So I gave up and said I'll just go to the restaurant and order. I called them as I was walking in and heard no sound, which was odd. Then I asked to place an order and what does the man at the register tell me? "Sorry we are closed." Which I then Asked if their phones work and if the number is correct to which he responded "yes". And he played with the phone which THEN made a sound. . THEY HAD TURNED OFF THE VOLUME OF THEIR PHONES!!!!!! And It made sense as to why these people did not answer their phones ONE HOUR before they closed. Oh and he also mentioned "they already cleaned and put everything away." Im sorry but if your page states you close at 10 then you should close at 10 not 9:40 or earlier trying to avoid customers. And if your restaurant has a "last call" policy then maybe you should change the close time to 9:30 since people cannot walk In to eat after 9:30. I will never return here again and am shocked at the lack of care they have for customers.

My favorite, delicious, decent-price, quality sushi place to go to! The green dragon roll is the best here! Do not come when it is packed!! The servers are not always the best but sushi is definitely worth it :)

what a disgusting customer service, I came here to pick up dinner for my friend and I and I was really unsatisfied. My friend eats kosher only so I had to take a close look at their menu to make sure that his food is only kosher. The lady at the cash register who was supposed to help me was so inpatient and rude, she even told me that she doesn't care whether my friend is kosher or not and there's going to be an extra $3 charge for each roll if I'm going to eliminate any kind of fish from the roll and $6 charge if I'm gonna add... Plus their food isn't that great, specially when it's made with anger and bad attitude.

This place was a pleasant surprise. A little gem in the neighborhood, that were not sure why we traveled far before for some good sushi. Great social, energetic yet family friendly spot. Sat at the bar to avoid wait time for a table. Service a little slow due to Saturday night but not something that would stop us from coming again. Salmon salad is an item always get at any new sushi place I try. The baked salmon roll by far my favorite next garlic shrimp sushi at another place in the valley.

This place is very close to my house and I have been a few times. They have great service and they offer fresh sushi. Very friendly service and comfortable inside and patio seating. Love to have lunch with my cousins at this place to catch up with alittle bit of Saki

This is the closest sushi joint to my house, so we dropped by when we had a late night sushi craving. Much to our surprise, this place was packed at 9:00pm on a Thursday. After having eaten there now, I'm even more surprised that this place is so popular. It took about 50 minutes from the time we sat down to when our food arrived (and we had ordered as soon as we could). Still, we didn't complain -- not even when the table that arrived half an hour after us got their food first. :( The sushi itself was very meh. Nothing was particularly awful, but nothing was particularly good either. It was like the purgatory of sushi, except it all came with a pretty high price tag. I'm also a wuss who doesn't like spicy stuff, so I carefully perused the menu to find a roll that wasn't spicy (and there are an awful lot, another sign that this obviously isn't a very authentic place). When my order came, it was SPICY! I even made my non-wuss friends try it to make sure I wasn't being oversensitive, and they agreed that it was pretty spicy. Red pepper menu icon, why do you fail me! Overall, my opinion is there are a ton of decent sushi joints in the Valley. Why wait around for an hour and pay a lot of money for mediocre sushi?

  • Lucy A.

This is the closet sushi to my house so we go on weekdays when we need a sushi fix but it's really nothing special. Definitely stick to the rolls here. Oh, they have this one sushi with a lettuce wrap that's very light and good. But if you're a real sushi eater, you won't love it here. As for the service, I usually get this one waiter that messes up at least once but the rest of the staff is nice and friendly. Huge parking structure so that's a plus.

One of the only places I'll eat sushi. The other place I'll go is the same owner. Amazing food! I like sitting at the sushi bar, it's fun and the guys are really nice. I recommend the baked mussels and soft shell crab. I don't like a lot of rice so the guys will do substitutions. Get there after the dinner rush because it's always packed. The waiters aren't the best so I would sit at the bar if possible. The food makes up for it. Overall, decent experience.

  • Kymberly K.

I am seriously amazed at these reviews; I guess it just goes to show you that you can't take other people's word for it! This is my neighborhood spot and everyone who I have taken here absolutely loves it! If you have bad service, it's probably because you are a rude client. The only thing I would say is that they could work on refilling drinks more quickly, but Helen who is my usual server is great at it and knows what I usually like to eat. Overall I've been to many sushi restaurants, but if I'm in the valley, this is my first choice!!!

  • Scott S.

Good sushi at reasonable prices. I had a Rainbow Roll and a Green Dragon roll. Both were very good. Easy to get to and no waiting. Lunch specials and Happy Hour prices are also available. Overall, this is a nice sushi bar. I'll be back.

  • Alisa B.

Really good sushi! I loved the BSCR (had to request extra eel sauce), the Rock n Roll sushi was especially amazing and I would come back for that alone. The waiter and chef were accommodating and tried to get easy/ no rice rolls for my fiancé. Fish tasted pretty fresh, which is important because I always get albacore sashimi.

I've been going to a lot of happy hours at other places but the value in comparison to this one is tip top.. They have really friendly staff but it gets super packed so I noticed it gets super busy.. you cant expect attentive knee groveling service when its like a club in there.. but they do the job well 5 Stars for the Happy Hour. Gets really packed here everyday so they must be doing something right.. Baby Lobster Roll - Baked Lobster on Top of a cali roll Baked Mussels Jalapeno Poppers Sesame Chicken Very friendly Staff but could get busy at times

  • Justin E.

This is purely on the food, I have not dined in yet! I've taken to-go a few times now because they are so close to my house, and I've really enjoyed the sushi so far. My neighbors go there frequently so finally I said, "let me try!" The Toyota Roll is my favorite and I also really like the Catapillar! Eel generally is my go-to for sushi. I think they may be a tiny bit over priced, but that may be just because I've had so much sushi all around the country, and I have had better for what they charge. But... better sushi in this region? I've yet to try it if it is out there!

    (4)
  • Gustavo S.

This place is hit and miss. Both the staff on hand, and the quality of the sushi seems to vary. I've been here a couple of times, and when the staff and ingredients are good quality, the experience is great. Today was not one of those days. Waited a bit to be seated (place was at half capacity), then waited for drink and food orders for nearly 20 minutes. No one said "I'll be right there", just walked by. Like I said though, hit and miss. If you stop by on the right day and time, the place is good. FYI, if you're a CSUN student, 15% discount with ID.

    (3)
  • Kenny B.

I would have given five stars but somehow (depending on who your server is) something is either brought to the table incorrectly or something you ordered at the table might never be ordered by your server.(she seems to only forget when she's busy) that being said the food is always delicious fresh and service is quite adequate besides the previously mentioned I will definitely come back again to this establishment. Oh, and their happy hour from 3 to 5 is wonderful deal as well

    (4)
  • Emerald B.

Eh, wouldn't really come here again. The restaurant is nice and pretty, but the food and prices aren't that great for what it is. Came here for the first time with my fiancé and we ordered a bunch of the specialty sushi dishes but weren't very pleased, especially since this place is a little pricier than other sushi places...we kind expected to have our minds blown. Unfortunately it didn't happen. The sushi was decent and the service wasn't too bad either, but I found a couple of other better sushi places in the valley. For those who want to try amazing sushi, try this place called "Sake 2 Me" also in the SF Valley. Thy even have an all you can eat option which is extremely worth it because speciality dishes are included! :)

It's 3pm on a Saturday and this place is empty and all the waiters are just standing around. None of them asked if I may want more water or if there is anything we would like to order. The sushi is old and brown. And they charge 50 cents for a drop of saracha on a hand roll

    (1)
  • D C.

This place keeps increasing their prices for mediocre sushi. I was charged 50 cents to make my hand roll spicy and when I got it, it had a brown piece of salmon!

One of the decent sushi places in the valley. lots of special rolls to choose from. snow cone roll is a fave. Mango ice tea is great as well. Service is a little slow at times though.

Yet another garbage sushi bar in the valley. Terrible quality/price. Ordered a chirashi because the photo on the menu looked pretty good. But what I received had no resemblance to what's shown on the menu. I complained. The server came back saying "we use the top notch quality fish here and yes there's some discrepancy between the photo and what you got here but that doesn't mean the quality is not there in the chirashi bowl". Top notch for you yes.. what I can say to that.. I let him go and decided to punish this restaurant by not coming back.

One of my first choices when I'm craving sushi in the area. My favorite rolls are the 101 roll and the rose roll. Service is great and prices are reasonable as well

  • Angela L.

Get their crazy roll (has a lot of fried shrimp over the sushi) and spider roll (chunky generous pieces of softshell crab in it) . If you want to fill up but dont want to spend too much then get a bento on the side. The sesame chicken and katsu is pretty good. For dessert, try their tempura green tea ice cream- it has fried pound cake outside the greentea. How can you say no!?! Dont be silly. This place plays pretty loud music for a sushi place for some reason... Its normally pretty crowded for dinner (ive only been here for dinner) so if you are a larger party, go a little earlier than 6pm or after 830pm to guarantee a seat.

    (4)
  • Nane H.

Gave this place about 4-5 tries over the years.... Never. again. If you're lucky enough to wave down a waiter.... He will be short, quick, unfriendly, and even rude. Not a single smile from any of the employees... Food- it's OK. Not the worst, definitely not the best. shrimp tempura comes with ONLY 2 pieces of shrimp, the rest was veggies Each time I leave here, I wonder why I came in the first place....

Affordable, decent quality sushi perfectly describes this place. Waitresses are really nice but can forget about you if the place is really busy, as expected. They have everything your standard sushi place serves. Nothing too exciting

Listen, this is the best it gets here in the valley in regards to sushi. So if you don't feel like making a far trip, and want to enjoy some good sushi, Asahi is the place. It's not top quality sushi, but it's good and tasty and I've never really not liked anything here. I always say you can judge how a sushi place is going to be by their ginger (their ginger is always fresh and crisp). I usually order to go (for those who do take out), but occasionally I will sit down with the fam bam. Things to try: You must try their garlic edamame. It was served warm so it almost melted in your mouth. I love their play boy roll, baked roll scallop, and sashimi salad. Their portions are pretty big. However, the only thing I may not be a fan of is their green tea. It's a bit watered down. But all in all, I like this place and the servers are really sweet. I usually deal with Helen. Prices are affordable, and parking is no problem as it's located in a huge shopping center.

  • Jade P.

Went here for the first time. Pretty decent rolls and sushi but nothing really special. Service was great, though, which was surprising considering their service is getting a lot of bad reviews here. We went on a Thursday night and there weren't a lot of people so that's probably why we got better service. Tried a lot of their rolls and I really liked the snow cone baked roll and tornado roll! Not really worth the 30 minute drive so I probably won't be back but if I'm in the area, I might revisit but only for the snow cone and tornado rolls!

This is a great sushi place..lots of specialty rolls you don't find at other sushi joints. My fav is the "rock n roll" which is assorted fish wrapped around shaved cucumber in a delicious and light sauce..so refreshing!!! Prices have recently gone up quite a bit which is a bummer and the wait staff is a little unpredictable..they usually try to get you in and out quickly, which for me, is fine as I prefer to shovel and leave lol. But for those who like to have longer dinners, you might feel a bit pushed.

Good sushi at a geeat price. The food is good service not so good. Waiters can be little more friendly. Had 6 rolls and a teriyaki bowl for under $70. The spicy tuna jalapeño roll is amazing. Great place to take kids. Will definitely come again.

Low quality sushi, meh staff, high prices. No thanks. Go to 2 die 4 on Topanga if you want to spend 40% less and have more attentive and nicer service.

This place charges an additional 20% gratuity even if you have a party of 6 or less. The lady Helen counted a 6month old baby to be an additional person. If my brother didn't look at the receipt and question it he would have paid 40% gratuity. Shady shady shady business! Just a heads up, pay close attention to your bill!

So glad to have a decent, clean, and local sushi spot in Granada Hills. The manager is always on site and very involved. Their service is great and quick (almost always). They have several flat screens if you happen to want to watch a game. Extended patio area out front. Ordered: Miso Soup- actually flavorful (not watered down like most places) 101 Roll (like a crunch roll with spicy tuna on top) Asahi Roll (spicy tuna roll topped with albacore) Baked Baby Lobster Roll (Cali roll topped with lobster) *lunch tip- the spicy tuna salad is great! All very delicious and fresh! This place has picked up tremendously from when we started coming years ago.

  • Sam S.

Done with this place. They told me that "they've heard rumors about me" and other stuff. Odd place. Go to Honshu, best sushi in Chatsworth/Northridge/Granada Hills. Anyone who is stingy over ginger and laughs every time you ask for wasabi should not earn any of your business.

Not that great for what they are charging. I would def not go back. However, I do have to say that they try to make their rolls look appealing on the menu. I would say try it out for yourself, but this place is not for me.

Good food BAD service. There is no customer appreciation. Waiter told us we would get a CSUN discount on the specials as well. After we paid the check, (with great tip) the main lady caught up to us and made a big deal about $4 (on a $80+ check) and how the waiter made a mistake. Mind you we have been going there for 3 years. No more.

  • Love B.

Rule of thumb. Sushi & happy hour don't go together. Order sushi and pay retail to get best quality sushi. I've probably been to Asahi over a 100 times in that past 7 years, and at one point I even was interested in purchasing this spot right before the new ownership came and took over this place. This place has become more than just a sushi spot for me. I trust Helen, which I believe is the manager there who really does her best to provide quality service for their customers. For some of the 1 or 2 stars reviews that I'm reading regarding the service, you should've been there to see how bad it was during the prior ownerships time. They make decent sushi for the price you pay but I can't say it's Nobu quality sushi. Than again, if you're prepared to spend $500 for a party of four than you may want to consider going there, if not than Asahi isn't a bad choice for sushi in the valley.

  • Daisy A.

I used to love coming to this spot but the last experience left me wanting to go to another place. The food was good but I was disappointed because I had my hubby order the bento box for me since I was meeting him there. When I got there (like 5 min after he ordered) I noticed he failed to add tempura to the order so I asked our server if we could add the tempura to the be to order and he said no! That the order was already put in. - how hard is it to just say to the cook, "add tempura"?? It wasn't hard for me, so how hard was it for him??? Anyway, I had to order a whole separate side order of it and apparently THAT was acceptable. Sigh. The waiter took forever to come to us to give us water and refills and to see how we were doing so, yeah, the service was not good at all. I like that they have tv's I would probably go back as this was the first crappy experience here so hopefully I can go back and they can go back to being good. Lets see. Oh. Prices are average for any hole in the wall sushi place. There is a parking lot that they share with the pizza cookery next door (yum btw!!!) and a few other little stores.

the family ate here yesterday, for my dad's birthday dinner.i ordered baked salmon, philadelphia roll and the balboa roll for us to share.since then, i had a bad stomach cramping and been running in and out of the restroom..we've been frequenting this place but i just don't know why it happened..so i hope the management can do something about this.. THANK YOU!!!

2.75 stars. Gets the job done. Freshness and quality are a crapshoot, you never know what you'll get. Service was awful, I remember coming here a few years ago for a birthday, when we told our server about the celebrant, he just rolled his eyes and said "So?". No singing, no freebies, nothing. We had to flag him for water. Lousy.

  • Kristen T.

This is my favorite sushi place in the valley. Every time we go we usually get seated right away, but sometimes the service is a bit slow and it's hard to get drink refills. But the food is delicious and they give a discount if you are a CSUN student.

I got food poisoning here. I've eaten here a handful of times for their happy hour that was always alright but the last time will be my last as I got HORRID food poisoning. The sushi chefs are always rude and not friendly in the slightest, plus they give you more rice than AYCE places! This place is way overpriced, they charge for every little thing they can, and they don't even serve good fish. EW NEVER AGAIN.

  • Bobby C.

Well, I came here once before and was not impressed. After getting out late, we decided to give this place a second shot. I will start by saying that the service was good. Hence the third star. We ordered the salmon and albacore sashimi. It tasted like it was fished last Memorial day. It had a very stale taste. We ordered the Bs c roll and it was ok tasting. The best thing we ordered was the garlic edamame. How hard is it to sauté soy beans with oil and garlic??!! Rolls were not rolled well, they fell apart easily and were over junked with sauce. It all tasted the same after a while. Either way, that will be the last time we go there.

    (3)
  • Erin M.

The food is good but the service is really hit or miss. Our server didn't know what fish was available, nor could she make recommendations because she wasn't a fish eater. We were ignored for over 15 minutes without having our order taken. Not good.

BAD BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE I have been living in the neighborhood for over 15 years and finally this evening I decided to visit this place since I did not want to drive even 5 miles to my regular sushi bar. What a mistake I did going in...I was so excited to see the bar was available basically I was the only person sitting at the bar (it was 5:00PM when I arrived) the greeting was bit awkward a young man greeted me as if I was soliciting the place rather then a paying customer. I ordered my sashimi tuna and then I asked for a spicy tuna roll, so when I got my roll I had to lush the plate on top of the bar...few minutes later the same clown came to tell me that I should leave the plate on the side and they will take away...so did I and I ordered my 3rd plate of sashimi albacore while I was waiting for the 3rd order my plate was waiting like an orphan to be picked up, however, sunshine never showed up! Once again this time I pushed the plate to the side this time and guess what that plate did not get picked up until I finished my dinner and beer and paid my bill and regretfully I left a generous tip to Mr. Sunshine. I will never go this place for the service plus the quality often fish is not AAA Perhaps B.

Extremely happy about this particular sushi spot. I'm no sushi fan, but my husband is. I took him here for lunch on his birthday (since I hate it, he barely goes!) every time I go out to a sushi spot I order chicken teriyaki. This particular spot has the BEST chicken teriyaki I've had. My husband got the fantasy roll, and liked it a lot as well. The atmosphere is upbeat, friendly and welcoming. Our waitress was very accommodating and friendly, as was the rest of the staff. I definite recommend grabbing an Asahi beer to wash your meal down!

  • Reyna A.

I went there not too long ago and I had such a bad experience that I'm never going there again! I had gone in there to order sushi to go, when I walked in there the restaurant was nice I made my order with an older lady at the register for 3 different orders of sushi and 2 regular sodas totaling about 40$ I use my debit card for my transaction and when I got my orders I asked the lady for a couple containers of hot sauce, she said each container was .25 cents I told her to charge it to my card and then she said it was a minimum of 10$ I got so upset and told her that I had already purchase 40$ worth of food and she was still charging me for sauce!!!! and to mention I had no cash with me I had to go to my car and search for coins. She didn't let it go!!! Lucky me I found .50 cents and went back in there, the lady was so rude for a couple of containers of hot sauce!! I'm never going there again! EVER!

The best sushi restaurant I've ever been to in the valley! Honestly, I've tried a good majority of them and nothing else has come close to what Asahi has to offer. Okay, well, there are a few that have come close, but I always find myself thinking, "I should have just gone to Asahi." Some places tend to be a bit cheaper, but what's a few extra dollars when you want quality food? I've been going to this place for about 6-7 years and their food has never disappointed. I always order their soft shell crab and seaweed salad as appetizers. Both are light and perfect servings (especially for two) so you don't get overly full before your main course. I'm not particularly fond of raw fish (not because of the taste, but texture) so I can't be much help with the fresh menu, but I always order from either the tempura or baked sushi categories. Some of my favorites are their Baked Salmon Roll, Snow Cone Roll and Caterpillar Roll. And if you still have room after your main course, be sure to try their Green Tea Tempura Ice Cream. One of my favorite desserts ever! If I could point out one flaw it's that their customer service has gone down a bit in the last few years. Not that the food doesn't come out fast enough or they don't refill your water as often, but the friendliness, I suppose. I remember when I first started coming here the staff was extremely friendly and always smiling. But obviously after a remodeling and becoming a lot more popular they have become very busy, but it's not something that has changed my opinion of them. I still love it and will continue to stay a loyal customer whenever I'm craving sushi. :)

Already so disappointed. I asked where they got their fish and knowing there is a leak in the news about Japan's nuclear waste contamination in the pacific, the manager insists that the fish is NOT from Japan, but only insists that the fish MIGHT be from Alaska. Which is the same ocean. She really didn't feel sure about the answer. Then, upon ordering the got sake, I decided to go with a beer instead, but did not let me change the order or take it off even though I didn't drink it. I ended up ordering the beer anyone and ordered all non fish items like Cali rolls, udon and veggie tempura. Since the crab they use in sushi restaurants and always fake crab, just to be safe.

The sushi here is pretty good. We come here for lunch and get the special that comes with a CA roll, yellow tail, shrimp, tuna, mackerel, and something else that I can't remember, sorry! Served with miso soup also. Portions are decent, staff is friendly, and service is great. Your meal comes out quick, which is awesome because we try to eat and hit a bucket of balls down the street before returning to see patients at the Veterans Hospital. I like it when they say Irashimase when you walk in....of course it is a dead give away that the place is run by my Korean friends and not my Japanese peeps by the accent, but shouldn't keep you from trying this place. I say this because I don't usually frequent Korean run sushi places. Having said this, Asahi is really good. I actually saw some of the dishes that they had prepared and will probably order something different next time.

A little overpriced sushi. However, slices are pretty big. Service is fast. Their green tea (iced, hot & the ice cream) taste NOTHING like green tea! Wouldn't consider ordering it. It taste so artificial and sweet..not the good kind of sweet. Crazy roll & the Green Dragon are my faves here!

I always thought this was a decent restaurant for a quick sushi fix when I didn't feel like driving down to Ventura Blvd for some quality sushi. That is, until a few weeks ago. I ordered albacore sushi to go. When I got home and opened the box, the albacore was brown. BROWN! ALBACORE SHOULD NOT BE BROWN, ASAHI!! As much as I did not want to eat it, I paid for it and forced myself to try it. Definitely tasted old and rotten. I had to throw it away. Although I believe one mistake every now and then shouldn't justify a low yelp score. I was going to leave 3 stars until I remembered how horrible their service is. It seems as their employees are always in a bad mood and they want to rush you out of the restaurant. Especially this one middle aged lady. Always has a sour face, barely comes to the table. Extremely rude.

This was our first time after being recommended here, there was two couples plus two children in our group! My daughter is 2 and the other was 8 months! Both children didn't eat food/drinks just sat with us. We needed a table for 4 adults and 2 children. I had a dragon roll and then chose to add the crispy/crunchy topping I was told there would be a $2 charge extra, I said fine, I wasn't ok with it just agreed to be easy going! They barely sprinkled my roll!!!! O sales for more she said there woulf be another charge! What ever, The food was ok not better than any other place the rolls all fell apart when grabbed with our hands! No good not tight enough. If that weren't enough when it came time to pay they charged us a 20% gratuity automatically because we had 6 people In our party,, the 8 month old was asleep the whole time. When asked about the fee they said they charge for kids because "they get in the way" an 8 month old who was sleeping! She said I'll talk to the manager, so she came back and removed the fee I still tipped her just very upset with service and weak food!

I dig this place! The best sushi I've had in the area and the place itself is cool. A small, local spot with some style and good food. So glad to have found Asahi!

  • Mr S.

We used to love this place until today when everything was bland and old. He sushi rolls kept falling apart when it's usually nice and firm with the chop sticks. Everything we ordered was rushed out without any emphasis on quality control. We shall find another sushi spot.

  • Riana L.

The service sucks. It took 20 minutes to get a glass of water. The sushi is not bad but it's priced way too high for it's quality. The only time worth going is during Happy Hour

    (2)
  • Sandy S.

The customer service was just fine. The sushi.....not. Nothing too creative, and nothing tasted same day fresh. The salmon was particularly weird tasting, and hard to chew. Miso soup way too salty, and water tasted funky. Can anyone recommend a good sushi spot in the Northridge/Granada Hills area?

I am giving this place only 1 star based on a few factors. For starters, I had one spicy tuna roll, and it totally upset my stomach. I've always had spicy tuna, and they don't usually upset my stomach. My guess is low or poor quality fish. Next, the service was slow, it took about 7 minutes for someone to notice us and offer us drinks and such. Third, we had an emailed coupon from their chain, and when we presented it on a phone they didn't accept it. The owner lady was curt and didn't believe that was our real coupon. These days many restaurants just accept the email presented on phone. In short, avoid the spicy tuna!!! Low quality grade fish.

I would give negative stars if I could. I am so disappointed. Our food was good, until I noticed our second round of sake. Our first round bottle gave us 6 shots total while the second round gave us 3. Therefore I questioned our bill because our waitress charged us for two large sakes. I was only confused how we got more shots out of our first round than our second. She proceeded to tell us how " none of my other customers complain " and " want me to prove it for you ". I work in customer service and I kiss ass all day so I'm pretty lenient when it comes to service but I don't feel that she handled this the right way. She then brought the manager or someone to our table and did a water test to try to prove us wrong and I still asked why we got 6 shots out of the first round and she refused to give me a direct answer. I felt like she was trying to embarrass us and prove us wrong and they have obviously been ripping people off often because if this was an accident or misunderstanding then she would have been able to explain to me what the issue was or she would have appoligized for her error. They are ripping people off and laughing about it ! When we walked out, my boyfriend spoke to the women at the front desk and politely said that we think they made a mistake she literally laughed at him without making eye contact and said we were wrong. These employees are so rude. Something that wasn't even a big deal turned into terrible customer service. Check out your sake bombs next time !

Since I wrote my first review back in 2009, this place has changed. The miso soup is no longer $1, the CSUN discount doesn't apply to everything and the Las Vegas Roll is no longer on the menu. This place is still one of my favorite spots for "commercial" sushi.

    (4)
  • R A.

If I could do a 2.5 I would. Asahi has some very good sushi, very bad service and the water would have tasted cleaner out of the LA river. We have gone back here several times and have never been impressed in any way. Go up the street on Chatsworth to Gatten, at least there it's reasonably priced and the drinks don't make you choke.

Love the sushi here! Quick service. Lucky to have it in the neighborhood. Salmon sashimi is my favorite, the green dragon roll and the garlic edamame. Helen is the best, she really makes you feel at home when you're there.

Well I hate to do this but when you and your buddy get violently ill from their "sushi" something is really wrong here. I have NEVER gotten sick from a sushi meal before, not even the buffet style, conveyor belt or ayce joints. They offer a sushi "happy hour" from 8:30 to 10 M-Th, but trust me there is nothing happy about it, I think they are just using up old fish. Not sure if any of the other patrons suffered the same fate yesterday but ouch! Enough said:(

This place has good sushi, was good quality food. I loved both the rolls I ordered and their miso soup. But I won't be coming back. I went on a date here with my boyfriend and we arrived around 9:30, he hasn't tried sushi so we took about ten minutes deciding what to eat. Our waitress basically told us to hurry up on the order because they don't take any past ten. That was just rude and unprofessional. Not only did I feel rushed, you could tell the entire time she was getting SO anxious to leave. It specifically says they close at 10:30. I left at 10:10 because of how often she kept coming by basically making us feel bad about staying. You could see the look in he face she wanted us to go. She was the worst waitress ever, I just wanted a nice date with my boyfriend but having the feeling of people wanting you to leave ruined it. Do not come here at night. Go to octopus. They have happy hour at night and they are way more polite

This is a good place to get sushi in the area, especially if you can get a csun discount. It gets crowded at times, but the wait is never too long. Service is okay, some days it's good other days it's slow. My bf and I always order the Sashimi Salad. One of my favorite rolls there is the Crunch Roll.

    (4)
  • Jonah W.

I really enjoyed this place. Sure not the best Sushi, and there was certainly a wait to get in, but great service and pretty damn good. In fact the albacore with ponzu was phenomenal. They also have a huge amount of quirky rolls, though a few too many with spicy for me (I love spice, but tend to think it wipes out the fish flavor, so don't go for spicy sushi). My favorite is the Balboa Roll with Spicy Tuna, Shrimp Tempura, Avocado, Cucumber w.seared albacore and fried onion (kind of a panko crusted onion strips). Well worth checking out if you are in the area.

I recommend the scallop roll, or baby lobster roll there to die for it's the only place I go to(: the environment is relaxing your able to watch the games there and it's really clean (:

I've been to many sushi places and the sushi here is great. However, I have had more than a couple of unpleasant encounters with the waitresses and manager. I was looking at the pictures on the menu and asked if one of the salads came with avocado (as it showed in the picture) and was told that it did. When I got my salad there was no avocado and I told the waitress. She then told me "No the pictures are just for show." We argued for a bit and I thought it was useless. I haven't been back since this last incident. I would recommend Sushi Raw which is right down the street.

I have been coming to this restaurant since it was called fresh fish, after McDonalds moved out. The place is amazing!! i know that the food is a bit pricey but its worth all the way, most of the servers are awesome and the main host or owner is extremely nice, i go here as much as i possibly can. this is one of my favorite places to go for Sushi. i actually drive out of my way to come here.

I LOVE this place. I found this place when one of my coworkers wanted to eat out for lunch. That was about 2 years ago, ever since then I have been hooked. So addicted I kept a menu at my desk to place pickup orders for lunch. The portions are great, the price is okay, & the service can vary. They have there attentive days as well as there non existent days. All in all I will always be loyal to Asahi Sushi. If they would delivery everything will be golden. BSCR: Baked Scallops over California Rolls my favorite there. Baked Salmon Roll: salmon cream cheese goodness. Seaweed Salad: always a good starter. Fantasy Roll: Good change from the CA Roll Stuffed Jalapenos: Good when its hot! Gyoza: the dippin' sauce is yummy. There are so many other great things on the menu, you should try them!

I don't get how this place got only 3 stars!! Hands down this is the best sushi restaurant in northridge!! Not going to name the other places that aren't as good, but trust..... Asahi is better. The prices are about the same which is decent and their portions are big!!!! You get what you pay for!! At other places the rolls are so tiny!! The food tastes fresh!! You can tell cause the avocados are green and not almost turning black... Yuck. My favorite is bscr!!! Yum yum in the tum tum!! A lot of their rolls are so gooddd. 2 rolls are enough for me, but I usually get 3 for variety ;) and have leftovers. Like their portions are really goodd... I don't think I've been to a sushi place that filled me after 2 rolls! Just go for yourself!!! Trust! My mouth is watering thinking about asahiiii :(

Ate here per recommendation of a friend. Was deciding between the sit-down pizza place next door and this restaurant. Should have had pizza that day. There wasn't anything memorable about the sushi, the sushi didn't taste fresh, and with the recommendation given, my expectations weren't met. Don't think I'd eat here again.

    (2)
  • Clarissa T.

The sushi is mediocre, and the servers are terrible!! The only reason I end up going here is because it's close by. The waiters are not polite & seem to forget everything you ask them for, and the waitresses are even worse. There is an old lady waitress that has a look of annoyance all the time, and every time you ask her for something (utensils, eel sauce etc) she doesn't even acknowledge whether or not she's heard you. When you ask again, she normally snaps back saying she will get it. They seriously need more training on how simple customer service.

went from ok to unacceptable! all the workers behind the counter are so rude (don't wanna call them sushi chefs, they don't deserve to be called that) and incompetent. -they don't greet u when customers sit at the bar -all fish are not wrapped properly -they just talk among themselves in Korean and don't pay any attention if we need anything

Really loved this place! It's right off the street, easy to see, and has great parking! Service was fast and the food even better... A miso soup, two spicy tuna rolls, and a red dragon roll! Perfect outing to a great day! This place is fresh, new, and fun to be at! Overall... Great experience!

The baked salmon roll with avocado and cream cheese is my favorite. Ok let me make this clear, I give the sushi here 5 STARS. But the reason why I give them a 4 star review is because they take FOREVER sometimes. I've gone to this place a few times for lunch and dinner. Every time I went they took such a long time to take your order. Last time I went I had to wait 45 minutes after I was done eating just to get my bill. Its not like that all the time. It is a hit and miss on the service. However the sushi is amazing, and for that I'm willing to wait.

This is one of my favorite local sushi place's in terms of food and customer service. I'm a picky person when it comes to sushi but their sushi is fresh and delicious. I love the....oh my god roll, philly roll, salmon sashimi, baby lobster roll, green dragon roll and the newly added popcorn shrimp roll!!! I would highly recommend it if you're in the valley!

Very inconsistent. I keep trying this place because it's close to home but it's always different. I have had great and terrible sushi here. The only good sushi I have found near the area is King Burger-Got Sushi? on Reseda. It's a burger place with great sushi. If you don't mind the 15 minute drive, go to Chiba.

Had the best experience here. Great Sushi! Very nice and helpful waitress aaaand the sushi was ready in about 5 minutes. It was incredible. they were definitely on their a game. • Erin H.

Eh, it was Ok. Sushi didn't taste as fresh as I expected. Prices were a little high for portion size and to top it off they messed up on the bill and didn't know how to split it 3 ways with our cards. So, instead they put it all on one card. If you are not going to give separate checks at least know how to split it evenly with 3 different credit cards.

After being recommended by a few friends, my family and I decided to try Asahi. As soon as we entered, the waiter had us seated and got our drinks (the cups for the drinks are quite large). He was very efficient, giving us more than enough time to decide on our meals. The service is very quick. After maybe ~7 minutes of waiting, our food was served. We ordered seaweed salad, salmon sashimi, crunchy roll, baked salmon roll, pork and cod bento, and miso soup. The sushi was delicious! I know this restaurant is owned by Koreans (not that I have anything against them) , but the sushi tasted very authentic. I recommend the baked salmon roll. I also suggest you save room for dessert! After the meal, we ordered fried ice cream tempura. It was good! I think this restaurant is perfect for big groups. The noise level was pretty much quiet and the waiters and waitresses are quick to serve. Now, the only reason I give this place a 4 out of 5 is because although their sushi was good and cheap, it wasn't the absolute best sushi I've tasted. The crunchy roll kind of got soggy and would fall apart every time I tried to pick it up.

I'm sad to edit my review and lower my stars to three, but the last few times we have come here, the service and food have just been ok. We stopped by for lunch on a Sunday with hardly anyone in the restaurant and our server barely even came to our table. At one point, we actually had to find her to get our check. As far as the food, it's just middle of the road. I don't know what happened since the first handful of times we went, but it's just not the same. It's pretty pricey for the quality of fish you aren't getting. I went for lunch by myself and ordered one roll and some edamame and my bill was almost $20 (I didn't even have a drink). Just a bummer since this used to be one of our favorite places!

The place is REALLY great. i've been here 5 or more times and everytime me and my girlfriend come we get great food and great service. I usually stick to the same rolls when i order but i switch it up sometimes and everything we've tried has been great. They even have a CSUN discount i think its 10% i can remember how it works with the discount but we've used it every time we've been there and hey 10% is great its not a lot but better then noting. the pricing is about the same you would find everywhere else maybe just a little over priced but hey good food, good service, good time i dont mind paying a little extra for it. Our #1 spot when we want sushi in the valley area.

Sushi & lots of other non-seafood items (bento box, noodles, etc) which is perfect for those who like sushi & those who don't! Service here was really good, don't know what every1 else's deal is but when I went, it was fantastic. Their peach iced tea is also really good! They also had mango but I didn't wanna try that. Sushi was decent, bento looked big (enough for leftovers w. the 3 combo). I'd come back here again for the sushi-haters in the world. They offer more than teriyaki, so yay!

The food is good, but recently when my friend and I came late (9:30), the food was extremely gross. The spicy tuna was watery paste and literally coming off the roll. But usually the sushi is decent

Every neighborhood needs a reliable, reasonably priced sushi restaurant and fortunately for the GH, there's Asahi Sushi. I remember this joint when it was a McDonald's back in the day and thought it impossible for a sushi restaurant to take over the space. After many years of driving by this place, I was proven wrong. Asahi is a solid neighborhood sushi standby. Sushi quality is good as are the quantities. The price is pretty reasonable. Massive special roll and 4 piece sushi lunch special was only around $13.99 - pretty solid deal anywhere in SoCal. Service I found mixed. One waitress seemed way too rushed while the others were very polite so I guess it depends on who's waiting your table. My hot tea cup overfloweth - it never went empty, which was a nice bonus. Interior is perfectly suited for a weekday dinner out with friends or family - casual, but upscale enough with a nice outdoor patio and big screen TV. Asahi, I may prefer Sapporo beer over Asahi, but for sushi in the GH you're the twinkle in my eye.

I have been coming here 4 to 5 times a month for the past 4 years. I love this place. Sushi is fresh, prices are good they also give a discount for CSUN students. Some of the servers are a little slow. Some servers seem like they don't know what they're doing. But I would recommend Asahi 100%.

    (5)
  • Joanna Y.

I used to love Asahi, but a few years ago they came under new management and with the new regime, service and quality tanked. The seafood and meat (I used to love the teriyaki salmon and beef) used to be served in a great sized portion and were very well prepared. Last time I was there the salmon was disgustingly over-cooked. I ordered a raspberry iced tea and the glass was half-filled with sickly sweet raspberry syrup and half-filled with over brewed Lipton. It was so gross I couldn't even drink it. That incident was a couple f years ago, and I haven't been back since. Not worth the money, that's for sure!

The best thing about this place is the food. We've never had a bad dish and the sushi is always fresh and tasty. The service, on the other hand, sucks. We've had ok service and we've had bad service. Just earlier this evening we decided to give this place another try as it had been a while since our last visit. We were promptly greeted and seated. It took a little while for the waitress to take our order but she got it eventually. The sushi was brought out as well as the miso soup. After about 10 minutes, I asked where my beer was and she looked puzzled. Suddenly a light went on and she realized she had forgotten it. No worries, right. So then my meal came and it looked delicious but my girlfriend's did not. So, I waited patiently. About 3-4 minutes later the waitress returned to refill my water but for some reason, did not refill my girlfriend's glass, which was more empty than my own. So yet another few minutes later she returns with her dish and we eat. Overall, the food was good but it took a long time to get take-home dishes and the check. Also, they advertise a special discount for CSUN students, but there are so many restrictions on what is eligible for this discount, it hardly matters. We got a little bit of everything from the menu and nothing was eligible for the discount even though we're both students. So if you're looking for good food but don't mind waiting around all night for sub-par service, this is the place for you.

Not a quality sushi. I have tried many sushi places in the valley but havent found THE ONE yet. Still having to make a comute to DTLA or studio city for a decent roll.

Im a sushi whore, i been to a lot of sushi spots....This one i must say has been the MOST disappointing sushi and customer service i have EVER had. If your reading this, and thinking about going..don't bother...and if you don't want to listen to me, go ahead and give it a try....You will be looking back at my review and will say to yourself "shit, i should have listened".

I've been eating here since it opened a few years back since it's so close to where I live. Overall it's a pretty good place and in my opinion, has gotten better as they get older...My oldest daughter really enjoys sushi and my youngest enjoys the cooked options. When I first started coming here, some days the fish tasted super fresh, other days, not so fresh, but I have really noticed the past 6 months the quality has gotten a lot more consistent, and the fish has tasted nice and fresh each time we've been there. We eat here a few times a month. Their portions are big, I am a big eater, and one 101 or crunch roll can almost fill me up. Been eating healthier lately and have ordered a few of their salads; avocado and seaweed salad and both were good, but the portions were huge, one salad will easily feed 3-4 normal sized eaters. As for their service, it's certainly not as bad as some people have commented about, but there are times where it can be slow and you really have to ask for things, and if you order sushi items and cooked items, like most places i've been to, food will always come at different times. People though are friendly and I have never felt rushed to leave even when it's been busy....

I've been here 4-5 times and have tried multiple things on the menu. They are always consistent, never was disappointed by the sushi. One of my favorite sushi places in the valley. 15% off as a CSUN student is a great surprise on your bill! Sorry, I can't tell you which sushi is great, I'll update later because I can't recall the names.

My coworker and I go there often for lunch. The food is delicious, the bus boys are nice :) They waiters are always rushing and take wayyy too long to bring back condiments. There is one lady in particular there named Helen that looks like she rather die than work there anymore. Shes soo rude to us and we are regular customers. Besides that, I really like their food! So yummy and fresh :)

Not sure if I caught them on a bad day, but their service was SOOO SLOW! It took us forever to get our drinks and food. There was only one waitress working the entire resturant. But she could have at least made up for it by being nice... and she was NOT nice. Sushi was pretty run of the mill. Nothing outstanding or that I would reccomend. Probably won't be returning here.

used to order from this place every weekend, until I realized that the prices posted on the internet are lower then the prices being charged. Brought this up to management attention, and their answer was sorry prices changed and would not honor the internet posted price. I asked them to change the prices on the internet to reflect the correct price and they said they would. I looked up their prices on 4 different occasions in the last 3 months and prices on the internet were never changed, needless to say I am not returning to their restaurant until they fix their prices. I feel like I am being ripped off and so is everyone else. Great Sushi if you dont mind getting a surprise with the bill at the end!!!

The food was good but the service was ngeh. Came here w/ my daughter and boyfriend, as usual they greet you nicely when you come but that's pretty much it in terms of friendly service. We ordered a beef yakisoba, Snow Corn roll, and Jalapeno Tempura roll and mochi ice cream for dessert. Out of these three we ordered, I'd say the Snow Corn roll was the best. It had baked albacore, lobster, smelt egg, over a california roll (and it may have had something else on / in it too but I don't remember). I like that the yakisoba was a large portion for it's price ($9.95). Other places I know would've charged 11+ easy. The sushi prices aren't so bad either. Pretty reasonable in my opinion ranging from $6-12 depending what's in it. I also like the layout of the menu. I'm someone who likes my sushi baked / fried and rarely raw (except spicy tuna) and the menu layout has each of these sections and descriptions w/ pictures which is nice. The sections are Fresh, Baked, and Tempura. I wish all sushi places did this. It would make it a lot easier to order instead of having to ask "what's in it". The mochi ice cream was good however the picture it came w/ was misleading. On the menu, it showed the mochi ice cream w/ four different flavors as if the plate comes w/ the variety but you can only order one flavor. BOO. The service, like I said, lacking. The cups of water are so big and I think they made it like that so that they didn't have to refill your water as often. They never checked on us or asked us how our food was. And, when I gave the check she just took it and didn't say thank you, come again, etc etc. Good thing I minused $1 from the tip. Seriously, I tip based on my experience and if I ain't happy w/ the service then the tip will reflect that.

Love this place. Especially the tempura ice cream. The only complaint I have is that some of the music choices are inappropriate.

Never again. I have the biggest stomach ache right now... I'm squirming in bed trying to be comfortable but my belly isn't having it. I'm hoping I drop some kids in the pool very soon! And, the rolls are just packed with lots of rice to make it look big. Quality is meh. The sushi is NOT legit.

I'm done with this place. Dropped $140 on dinner and they have the nerve to ask me to leave because they had other guests waiting. Didn't even finish boxing up my own sushi and they are saying I have to bounce. Lame. This place has gone down the hill since the change of ownership and the fact that they now primarily cater to CSUN students ... kids who don't have money or think Shogun Sushi is awesome ... sad sad sad.

I love this place!! My best friend and i would always go to sushi raw across the street till i came here one night, and had a great dinner have not been there since lol....overall service was fast and friendly!!!

I really like this place, it has a good atmosphere and the employees are really friendly. They have a lot of rolls to chose from and it's pretty nice inside too. But honestly their sushi isn't THAT great for the prices. Not to say it's like crazy expensive but it's definetly more pricey than it should be. I saw that someone wrote their portions are big.. any time I've gone they've been normal sized portions for sushi. Their rolls are good and I honestly love the place, I go here a lot with family, but if you just want to grab lunch or don't feel like spending a lot of money, there are better places you can go and get the same quality for a cheaper price.

  • Criselle Q.

My family and I come here at least twice a month. I love this place!!! They have the best baked rolls ever - oh my god roll, dynamite roll, and jalapeno popper are my favorites. Oh my god roll has California rolls topped with spicy tuna and fried eel; dynamite roll has California rolls topped with lightly baked scallops, mushrooms drenched in creamy sauce and onions (my sisters and I always fight for this!); jalapeno popper is the cheaper version (only $6) of spicy tuna with cream cheese in a fried tempura jalapeno. They have pretty big serving as well (average of 8 big rolls per order). Helen unni (restaurant manager) is super nice; she'd always give us free tea, or green tea tempura ice cream, or miso soup or edamame since we're regular customers. If you have a CSUN ID, bring it and you can get a 15% off. They also have happy hour during weeknights after 8pm - a lot of appetizer rolls are almost half off.

Okay, I may have honestly just lost faith in Yelp based on the avg rating of this place. I am a sushi junkie and have tried sushi everywhere you can imagine, from Shogun to Katsuya to Geisha House to just about anywhere in LA you can think of and I absolutely love this place. Note I am only reviewing the sushi here and not the service as most know sushi places don't really have the best customer service. However the sushi is ALWAYS delicious and fresh tasting and I am yet to try a roll I do not love. Some people dream of burgers that look like the one's in commercials, well their sushi is the equivalent to that for me, it always comes out looking amazing no matter the rush, and the salad they put on the side with most rolls is too die for! Fried ice cream also comes out looking perfectly crafted and is a delicious end to an amazing meal! Love this place, have to try for yourself.

There is a lot of better sushi in the valley, and for the high-ish price charged here (~$10 a roll), it is definitely not worth it. They either need to step up their food quality or lower their prices. Got really good service when I went here, but the sushi was not what I was hoping for. The steak teriyaki was really good though, but that was about it.

So good and inexpensive!!! Always here every week!!! YUM!!! Crunch roll and Rainbow roll are the best.

  • Ej F.

The OMG roll had plenty of spicy tuna on top. The baked scallop roll was good and the NY steak roll did not disappoint. We also ordered a bento box with 3 items (spicy pork, bulgogi, and sesame chicken). Group of 4 guys all shared these dishes for lunch and left pretty full. Prices are a little high but the large portions and servings help justify that. Another nice thing is that they give 15% off on certain items for CSUN students! Staff was friendly and attentive. I'll definitely come back here sometime, maybe for happy hour and $1 Japanese beer or sake (after purchase of 1st drink at regular price).

  • Tiffany Z.

Is it bad that I can't remember what my favorite roll is called, lol All I remember it taste delicious Its a spicy tuna roll, topped with seared tuna drizzled with the perfect sauce and purple onion. If your expecting to kiss someone I suggest skipping the onion, LOL. It has a small side salad too. Happy hour only applies to sake and beer, I believe order one and get the 2nd free. the Salmon sushi um... I won't be getting that again. They didn't do a good job of cleaning a side of the fish. Other than that, it was good

  • Amanda L.

The sushi is good to very good, not foodie level or anything crazy, though. I think the service is really good and the staff is friendly. I do think the seaweed salad is a standout and have several times started thinking about it and had to change my plans to go get me some.

This place is pretty decent. not amazing, but good. Some of the rolls are on the pricy side. The service is, however friendly; the waiters are very attentive and kind.

Asahi offers quality sushi for very good prices. The two of us normally order the rainbow, caterpillar, sake (salmon), tamago, and other rolls along with a 2course meal (my favorites are the tempura shrimp or chicken teriyaki). Some pluses: CSUN students receive 10% off, refills are consistent on cold black or green tea and hot tea (soda comes in can and cup of ice), wait staff and chefs usually greet you upon arrival, decor is new and updated, music selection is fantastic (most Friday nights they play dance/techno and other pop music), tables are comfortable, you have a choice of seating either inside or in covered patio (great on warm nights but has heat lamps), consistently fresh fish, unlimited parking, close late on weekend days (around 10), and reliable and considerate service. Now for a few misuses: very small bathroom (single stall!), and pretty crowded after 7 on weekend days. Overall this restaurant is as good as Akasaka in Canyon Country and Castaic. It is also comparable to Sushimi in Valencia. The food is fresh, well-prepared and service is great.

    (4)
  • Cece L.

Excellent lunch specials (available on the weekend too). Very reasonably priced menu with extra fresh sushi. The shrimp rolls are not great because they seem to be california rolls re-named. I love their hot green tea because it has roasted brown rice added to give it an extra kick. The service is awesome, very quick and precise. I will continue visiting this place for my sushi cravings. They have a huge parking lot, park where the spaces say "Fish Dish." These spots are usually free because people don't know that this was the past name of this restaurant. Thanks!

I came here for lunch with a coworker. He has been here before; not me. He lives in Azusa; I live in the Valley...something's wrong with this picture! Whatever the case may be, I can now say I've been here! The place itself doesn't give me the "sushi house" feeling (used to be a McDonald's) but it's clean and the food was pretty decent. I referred the sushi there as "McSushi". We order a couple of cooked and uncooked rolls and they were okay but not the freshest. Nothing really stood out as being "earth shattering". It was decent for what it's worth. Service was a tad nonexistent for the most part and when we were there, there were hardly any customers. I don't remember anybody checking up on us. In summary, decent sushi in the Valley; service can be more attentive.

I am a hugeeeeee and i mean hugeee sushi fan...Never have i ever let my friends down whenever I'd take them to a sushi spot. I have many favorite sushi restaurants and asahi is definately one of them. I'd recommend trying their tempura california roll... I know it doesnt seem much but trust me, one bite and it melts in your mouth. Actually anything tempura is good on the menu. Only thing I didnt like was the fact that they charge you extra for the edemami. Most places ive been, it usually comes with it. But other than that. good food, good vibe. Great customer service and I've never had a problem with them.

I love Asahi Sushi!! I've been a fan of this place for 4 years now... and counting. It's always an experience coming here, the staff is super friendly (Helen is a gem) and the sushi is delicious! I've tried their Rose Roll, Fantasy Roll, Spicy Tuna Tempura Roll, Green Dragon Roll, Rainbow Roll, Shrimp Crunch Roll, Toyota Roll (baked), Avocado Salad and not once been disappointed. Everything is fresh and at a very reasonable price not to mention HAPPY HOUR you buy one tall beer of your choice, and receive a 2nd beer for 99 cents. Asahi definitely has something for everyone!

This restaurant was very crowded, but I'm not really sure why (probably the only game in town). Ordered various combination plates; the beef teriyaki was on the tough side. But aside from the food, the poor service really irked me. Even if it's busy, the wait staff shouldn't take away your tea cup and plate while you're still drinking and eating! I had to put my orange rind on an empty condiment dish. Felt like I was being pushed out the door!

I love this place. It is so great to start of with a great greeting from their staff, especially that hostess and Helen is always there to make sure I get the freshest sushi of the day. I always start off with some seaweed salad and then demolish some salmon and white tuna sushi. You must give this place a try.

Favorite place for sushi in the valley, hands down! The servers here are so friendly and the rolls are HUGE! About the same price as any other sushi joint, but nicely decorated, clean, and you get a good field green salad that's included with your specialty roll order. Great place for a first date!

  • Annie S.

Only the service here deserves a decent rating. The last few times I've been back within the last year I have been VERY disappointed. Will not be returning here again. Last experiences in a nutshell: At least one out of 3 dishes ordered for the table contain obviously OLD SEAFOOD. It tastes wrong and later makes you SICK when you get home. After notifying the server while dining, despite an apology we are still billed for it!!! For a sushi restaurant, fresh ingredients is a no-brainer and it's alarming when the restaurant repeatedly serves you junk. & did I mention that the rolls are packed with an inch thick layer of rice - leaves little space for anything else. save your money, go elsewhere.

This place is OK. Not the best and not the worst. The service is pretty terrible. I don't asked to be catered too but I do ask for a little respect, which they lack. The garlic edamame is pretty good but the sushi is a big EH. I near by so it's a quick sushi fix. Always crowded too. The valley needs better sushi places.

I like the food at Asahi. Try the crunch roll or the Oh my God. The staff are very kind and patient. The atmosphere and the design is kinda sketchy however not to mention the place its located. It tends not to get very packed. Try the green tea tempura ice cream if you have a chance. If you've never tried it before, you'll thank me for that! ; )

It's our great little neighborhood sushi joint. Fresh sushi and they remodelled so the ambience is nice. The service everytime we've been has been good. The prices are pretty reasonable and the selections are really extensive. The kids don't eat sushi so the chicken and rice dishes and also the combo dishes are right on for the little ones. The bar is always packed and we love to sit there, I just wish it was a little bigger. The green tea is to pass on for us along with the miso soup. Otherwise, we frequent Asahi when we're craving sushi locally and quick. They're alway accomodating and really friendly with the kids. Going back again this week!

I'm going to try to be nice since it's my first time writing a review. This place actually deserves 2 1/2 stars. The sushi was mediocre however our order came out pretty fast. The service was terrible from the minute I walked in the restaurant. Not only did anyone greet us as we walked in, but the waitresses were really rude and definitely need an attitude adjustment. Overall I was quite underwhelmed.

I love this place! :) Reasons why it's good: 1. Good food, decent portions, tasty. 2. Good service! They are always really nice and smiling. :) 3. You can just talk and eat and enjoy your food. Reasons why its bad: 1. The waiters tend to ask if "everything is okay" too often, I mean, that's a good thing, but a little less frequent would be nice. I am usually disgussing something while I eat with others, and they do interrupt sometimes.

The peeps and I went here on my most recent visit to LA. They just moved to an apartment around the corner, they hadn't tried it yet, and I wanted sushi once more before leaving. Eh voila, Asahi Sushi. According to some other reviews, they recently redecorated, and I thought it looked nice. The sushi was your typical Americanized California standard, but everything was fresh and nicely executed. Between the three of us we tried the California roll, Green Dragon, Salmon & Scallop, Big Tuna, Dynamite, and the veggie & calamari tempura. The big tuna and the dynamite were the hits of the evening, and I thought the California roll was really good. My favorite place is Love Sushi in Santa Clarita, so that's what I'll compare Asahi Sushi to. The quality and prep of the sushi were about the same, but this place is a little more expensive than Love Sushi. Service was slow, but competent for a busy Friday night. All in all, not too bad.

This place holds a special place in my heart. It's where I had my first date with my husband. It's also my son's favorite sushi place. Asahi is casual and family friendly. The staff is nice and fairly attentive. The waitress look out of each other and are happy to help you even if you are not their table. The sushi is good, not to die for, but good. I say this because some days it is really good and other days it's just passable. I am not sure why there is such an inconstancy. If you are not a sauce person, ask for "light sauce" as they are pretty heavy handed. I personally like to taste the sushi not the sauce. They have a large selection of unique rolls and I really like the small salad they serve with them. Very yummy.

I came here once with a friend because I heard good reviews, and I'm glad I did!! The rolls here are much larger than usual sushi joints, and the service was so friendly! The food came out pretty quickly also..i'm definitely coming back!

I was emailed the portion where my review was edited/removed for using "offensive language" based on the colloquial use of a particular ethnic group in reference to the change in portions that has come as a result of the new ownership. Wow. I actually offended someone here. Well, I will give it a go without using "offensive language," then. That said, the new ownership has, erm, reduced the size of their portions - specifically the combos - which used to include 4 pieces of a California Roll. I don't understand why the remainder of the post was deleted - as I see nothing offensive in it, so I will therefore repaste it again and see if it gets removed: The Yummy Crunch is not as "addicting" as the other 2 reviewers mentioned - it's like spicy tuna Bruscetta. Good, yes, but not worth the price because I can do without it. Green Dragon Roll is OK - not as good as Octopus Sushi in Brea's Tiger Roll. I hate Salmon Skin - and they douse it all over the Dragon Roll here. I'm a total shlumazel so if I have offended anyone, I duly apologize and will now take a break to have some gefilte.

The only Sushi spot i like to frequent near my home. The rest are pretenders or just Horrid!!! The $$ is reasonable i guess. The service is usually great although they have gotten a few new girls that aren't completely up to par for me. My recommendations: If you drink alot while you eat get the Iced Tea free refills vs 1 can of soda The Aloha roll - my 2 favs in one roll spicy tuna roll topped with Albacore The Yummy Crunch forget whats in it but sure is YUMMY My Fiance is squeamish so he always gets the Beef Teriyaki and the meat is extremely tender and the sauce if you don't mind your rice to be swimming is rather tasty. Go. Enjoy. Eat. and stop at the Baskin Robins down the street (my tradition that may become yours too =D)

This is a good place to take the kids and have a decent dinner. The food is good and the service is VERY fast! They have a bunch of different sushi rolls on the menu - I can't think of one to recommend. So if you're looking for choices - this place has them. Everything we tried was very good and decently priced. I will say that the sushi rolls seem to be the same if you look closely - they are just presented in different combinations. But really, for the price, this place is not that bad at all. I'm a sushi fan so I can't say it's the best place I've experienced, but it's not terribly bad either. We like this place a lot so we go here every other month. Our kids love it as well. Hope this helps!

Asahi Sushi has very good sushi and provides great customer service. The rolls are a bit expensive, but they are larger than most sushi rolls. The ambiance is very nice and for all ages. If you are a CSUN student, you get a 15% off the tab. The Cali-land and the snow rolls are delish! You won't be disappointed.

I loved this place, so far the best sushi in town, I had the veggie tempura rolls, the sauce is sooo good and it was just very delicious. The prices are pretty good too, and the rolls are big. YUM!

First of all , the pictures in the menu do not look like the food being served. If I had known the meat was going to be covered with sauce, I would've ask them to have the sauce on the side (the picture didn't show any sauce on the meat). TOO much Sauce! Maybe because of the sauce, it made it taste too salty. The rice was also dry... we were the first customer in the morning too on a Sunday. The kids didn't finish their food either and they usually finish their favorite, pork cutlet. (it was also kind of dry). Service was decent being we're the only other customer there, so it wasn't busy. Husband had Salmon & Steak and enjoyed them. However, we won't be eating there again - how do I begin. We left with a bitter taste in our mouth and stomach. We spend nearly $30 and wanted to use the Gift Certificate, but they refused to accept it, saying it was more than 1 year old therefore it had expired. I explained to the lady the gift certificate do not have a expiration date printed on it, so it can't expired. Anyway, she refused to accept it, so I asked to speak to the manager and she said there is not a manager for the restaurant, so I asked to speak to the owner. Then she tells me that she would take my number and have the owner call me. (I doubt it.) After coming home - I found the California Law which states that gift certificate do not expire unless it's clearly printed on the certificate itself. Come on! Measly $15 and lose 5 customers and the restaurant's reputation on top! This is the first review ever I felt so compelled to write, and I'm sorry it had to start off to be a bad one at that!

I've been here several times now and have enjoyed everything that I've ordered. The miso soup is always hot. The servers are friendly and will take your order by item#. I've tried the sashimi salad, the fresh steamed veggies, the sushi lunch special is a deal! I really liked the Tiger Roll and a few others too. All in all, we like this place over Sushi Raw, except it can be quite noisy.

Okay I think I figured out what's wrong with this place. Great food, big servings, but HORRIBLE service. I don't think the people who work here should be in the restaurant business because they really don't know what's going on....

This restaurant is close to my apartment, so I'm a regular there. The waiters and waitresses are friendly. My favorite rolls are Calamari Tempura Roll and Shrimp Crunch Roll. The Spider Roll is also great. The prices are reasonable, and it's really easy to find a parking space because Asahi shares the parking lot with many other stores in the plaza, including a Korean church.

This place BLOWS so bad I went through trouble of signing to write a review!! Don't bother the waitresses, they're busy chatting with the Sushi Chefs. The sushi rolls look like all the ingredients were slopped on my plate. Make sure you ask for the basics, you know, wasabi, ginger, hot sauce, straws, napkins, etc. before your waitress gets away. Never going to this place again!!!

  • Butch B.

I used to eat there a lot before the change of ownership sushi's all good but the service sucks now. I think all the servers there now don't have restaurant experience and are kind of rude. They put us on a table next to the restroom got our order and forgot all about us and never came back and ask how we were doing. I was so disappointed so for that sushi place that i love so much before ,i'll take my business somewhere else. That's the last time your service sucks. Hire somebody w/ more restaurant experience.

Ummmm.... they have a B rating now? This sketched me out at first, but I thought how bad can it be? We sit down and are the only other ones in the place besides this crazy 40 yr old white guy drinking sake at the bar. I used to love this place. Now it just looks old and run down. The fish didn't look fresh in the bar fridge... we ordered 3 rolls anyways. They gave us all of them at pretty much the same time, and by the time we were almost finished with the first one my boyfriend takes something out of his mouth and puts it on the plate and says, "i have no idea what that is, but its not anything in that roll".... GREAT! Now I was super sketched. But I was hungry, so we ate all the rest with no more problems. The only other thing? This guy at the bar, who apparently was a regular, kept talking to me... not my boyfriend, just me.... kinda weird, but I was polite. hmm.. what happened to Asahi?

The girlfriend's mom took us out. (The GF and I, Her big bro and his GF.) She was kind enough to treat us all out! When we got there, the place was PACKED! I have never seen a sushi restaurant packed full, the way it was tonight at the Asahi. I ordered the dinner bento (3 of your choices off the bento menu.) with beef gyoza, vegetable tempura, and teriyaki chicken. It also came with a bowl of rice, miso soup, salad, and a huge wedge of orange. My girlfriend also ordered the dinner bento, with spicy pork. Her brother ordered the "Oh my god" roll and his girlfriend got the "Crazy" roll, if I remember correctly. I'm not much of a fan of raw fish, but I assume they liked the taste. Mom ordered the vegetarian version of bento and she seemed like she was enjoying her meals. The service was lacking, but no worries, whenever we needed something, we'd call and there would be a waiter right over within seconds! So it's time to pay the pills, right? I wasn't sure what the range of prices were in Asahi Sushi. My girlfriend told me that their prices are pretty steep. There were 5 of us and the total came out to be around $104 (Around 20 a head.) Overall, I had a very good experience with the Asahi Sushi. If you are not a big fan of raw fish, do not be intimidated by its name. It also serves red meat!

Okay, I'll try to make this brief. This is the first and only time I will eat at this establishment. In need of a quick lunch I had a sushi craving and Asahi Sushi was next to an appointment I had to get to. I figured I would go although leery from the looks of the exterior. First impression was this is an old establishment in serious need of a face lift. So I was greeted at the door and requsted at a table so I could review the menu. Same old line up as everywhere else so I mistakenly went with the Albacore Salad. Typically this is hard to screw up but they went beyond that and gave me spoiled fish. The first taste was suspect so I investigated further and even went as far as tasting it again. This was terrible. I've been eating sushi for over 20 years and have never had raw fish served with that unsavory a texture and taste. Yuck! Stay away. You've been warned...

Consistently good food and great service has brought me back again and again. The portions are generous and the taste is excellent. I once spent 4 hours in the restaurant meeting clients and not once were they rude or asked me to leave. I ate VERY well that day. When my family comes in from out of the country this is the one place that they ask to come to for a good reason. The food! Wait staff is very polite and professional even though some of the patrons get a little rowdy with their sake bombs. My fave is the sashimi salad. The rose roll is always good if you like avocado with your sushi. The remodel is finally finished and there is plenty of room for good sized groups. Enjoy!

Asahi is hands down my favorite place for sushi in the Valley! Granted the prices are a bit steep, if only they had "all you can eat." I love getting their "albacore tempura roll" (no longer on the menu - it's a california roll with albacore tempura in the middle and comes with 2 pieces of the albacore tempura on the side) and the "101 roll." They also have good salmon usually. I love coming here with friends and family, the service is fast and very good. If you have a good taste for sushi, I promise you... you will not be disappointed in the quality of the fish.

Delicious fresh sushi, all the time! I have never been disappointed by this restaurant. This is classic sushi at its best! The food is always fresh and succulent, and I always received good and fast service. They're also great if you need catering. There is plenty of parking, the prices are fair and it's casual.

If you've never wanted a Heart Attack, then I suggest you change your mind. The Heart Attack is what I get the most. It's a spicy tuna roll with jalapenos!! It's amazing! The Toyota Roll is also really good. Hey, just think about it. You can roll in a Toyota and be completely safe. What more can you ask for? Other great items are the Edamame, Mixed Tempura, and Miso Soup. All are delicious!! So what are you doing still reading this review? Go!

THE MOST AMAZING SUSHI IN THE VALLEY! Ask for Mike, he'll give you the best service expected. Prices are great, & they do well with large parties. Try the Aloha Roll, it is to die for! We're drooling just thinking about it!

I went here for dinner last week. To my surprise "HAPPY HOUR" woohoo. First drink at regular price, the next drink is $1. The location isn't that great, but the sushi was pretty good. Staff was very friendly, so that was a plus. The sushi was priced good too. So, I'm coming back for sure.

Yummy! I'm not really a big sushi fan any more, so I usually get tempura shrimp and teriyaki, which are really good. but if I am in the mood for sushi, this is where I will go. Everything is very fresh, the presentation is great and the servers are friendly.

This place is now my favorite sushi place in the valley! The rolls are delicious, cheap, and HUGE, and the service is always on par!!! Be prepared and don't over order. The Washington Roll, Firecracker Roll, Hawaiian Roll are some of my favs. The mango iced tea is also delish! Enjoy! :)

We (my co-workers and myself) have been going to Asahi Sushi since before it was Asahi, namely when it was briefly a restaurant called Fish Dish. We were thrilled when it re-emerged from closure as a sushi bar and Japanese restaurant, as we were having to travel from Mission Hills where we work, all the way to Northridge or North Hollywood for decent sushi. We have found the food and service to be consistently very good to excellent. The selection of rolls and specialty items is huge and the pictures in the menu, which initially put me off a bit, I actually now enjoy. The Yummy Crunch, a chunky spicy tuna with cilantro on top of a flat crispy rice paper, is divine, and you should only try it if you don't mind becoming addicted. Our favorite roll is the Firecracker Roll which we order extra spicy. The spicy crab and shrimp handroll is also excellent. I will say that I have had better sushi, but not very often. There was that time when we went to a sushi place on Ventura Blvd. that was run by a Sushi Nazi, akin to the Soup Nazi from the Seinfeld show. You just sat down and he fed you, whatever HE wanted. No special orders, no spicy tuna, just the chef's choice (and if you had any doubts about any of these rules, they were spelled out on a chalk board at the entrance). Since I am now on a low-carb, low fat, moderate protein diet (too much good food, not enough movin' my butt!), I have switched to ordering their Sashimi Salad, which when you order it with the dressing on the side, is a perfect lunch or dinner that fits well with my diet. We continue to go to Asahi on a regular basis and even bring our friends, family and business associates with us. The food and service never disappoint.

if i can leave NEGATIVE stars i would...this place is NASTY. the food is expensive, way too expensive for the crap you get. the service SUCKED beyond belief...our waiter didnt even come to the table to ask if the food was good or if we needed something else. the tempura is soooo undercooked, almost raw. my daughters lobster roll tasted old and rotten. DISGUSTING!!! overall, horrible experience. i will never go there again. such a let down...oh well, if you people want to waste your money on rotten food, then this is the place for you!!! otherwise, go to a REAL japanese restaurant for quality food at reasonable prices...oh yeah, the wait staff actually comes to your table!!!

I recently discovered this place after a few people had recommended it to me! I suppose you could say I'm a seasoned sushi eater, so I tend to have a high standard of expectations and quality. Asahi provdes decent quality and assortment for a good price. The fact that they give CSUN students 15% off on rolls and dinner combinations is a great perk! They have a cozy patio area and like other reviewers have said, they play fun music. Their service has been good the 3 times that I've gone and we haven't had to wait to be seated even though they usually are quite full.

The sushi here is alright. Nothing super special. The area seems somewhat dead, apparently it really was formerly a McD's as per Tracy C. below. Seems a bit odd that McD's would become a sushi place, but whatever. The staff here are friendly, that is a plus, but the food for the price is not the best deal, considering the food is just ok and for some of those prices, you can get tastier food.

super whatevs. go to Shogun instead, its the same acceptable deliciousness and service, but half the price. also asahi makes their big american sushi rolls really weirdly shaped to fit in your mouth, even if you have a real big fat mouth (whats up). nice porch though, for really realz.

Great place. Fast service for take-out orders. They also give a discount for CSUN students, which helps a lot. Dependable quality for a pretty reasonable price. The staff are wonderful. One time a waitor forgot to order one of our rolls, so we were waiting a while... but another staffer noticed this and fixed the problem promptly, and was very nice about everything.

I remember this restaurant being a McDonald's back in my high school days. I have a friend that lives in the area, and he told us that his uncle highly recommended this place. So, we went one night, and things went great. They have a large variety of rolls, and the service was good. I'm thinking now it was just beginner's luck, because our second visit there was a disaster. We had a larger group with us (7 people), and we all wanted to sit at the sushi bar, so we had to wait (which we didn't mind because it was totally understandable). After we were seated was when things started going wrong. It took FOREVER for them to take our drink orders. Even though our group was divided among all the sushi chefs, it took a while for us to get our orders in, and when we finally did get some of our orders in, they would forget about them, and we'd have to remind them (this happened like 5 times). Our dinner abruptly came to a halt when one of the chefs asked us in the rudest manner possible, "ARE YOU DONE YET?!" Sure, we did take up the whole bar, but we gave them good business, it wasn't even close to closing time, and these chefs were just standing there doing nothing. I'm sure some of us still wanted to squeeze in some orders before we were rudely interrupted, but of course, that didn't happen. This was the worst sushi experience EVER. I'm disappointed, too, because their food was pretty good, but that doesn't even come close to making up for their horrible service.

I'm not a fan of this place. To start out, the menu had barely anything on it that interested me. In fact, it didn't even have some of the standard things you expect to be on a sushi menu. When I got my food, it didn't taste fresh, and I just wasn't pleased with it. Besides the mediocre food, the staff was nice and the place seemed clean.
